Sony – Consumer Electronics Galore
Sony
The image of the Sony Corporation, which was founded more than six centuries ago, has been primarily shaped by consumer electronics. However, the company started out in Tokyo in the communcation industry. This was a time when there was not much building material in Tokyo. At first, production began with rice cookers. However, even though these were partially developed within the company itself, they were not very safe.
Consequentally, the company's focus on the communication industry shifted to consumer electronics. This is when production of devices such as the transistor radio began. The groundwork for this was laid after negotiations with the company Bell Laboratories, by which the company obtained a licence to manufacture transistors.
In the year 1955, the company's electric devices received the Sony name, and a new brand name was born. They were always seeking further advances in consumer electronics. This partially consisted of minimizing the size of the systems, which led to more and more small systems taking over the consumer electronics market.
Today, televisions, camcorders, digital cameras and mobile phones make up only a small part of the company's array of products.
